Pitahaya
Different fruits are brought to the market
under this name. They can ripen further under room temperature. Ripe
fruits are soft when touched with pressure and should be stored in cool
temperatures. The pulp is eaten raw with semen. It contains a lot of
vitamin C, calcium and phosphor. The colour of the red is so
characteristic for the fruit that a colour was named after it in its
home Guatemala.
Characteristics: Family of the cactus.
Oval or round fruits, 10 to 12 cm long. Thick, yellow or red skin,
white or red pulp with many small, black semen. Origin: South America.
