Tin fabrication

The tin is still one of the most widely used storage methods for food. Especially with respect to tea, tins with lids are used, because they create a food safe, flavour and light protected atmosphere. Tins are mainly made from tinplate or aluminum.

The tinplate is printed with a motiv on the outside. Afterwards, it is painted with a protective, transparent coating. In the classical offset printing, the plates are dried in a drying oven. On the inside, most tins are coated with a protective, transparent or golden varnish.

In the subsequent production step, the large tin plates are cut into pieces as they usually contain more than one part of a tin. A single tin is made out of several pieces: base, lid, body and, sometimes, frames. Each component is represented on the plate. These are then moulded on automatic stamps, crimped and hemmed. Tea tins, cookie jars and coffee tins are generally hemmed, not welded.
